A new electric vehicle will be to be marketed in 2020, its prototype will be propelled by an engine that uses the energy generated by bio-ehanol. This bio fuel, contained in 30 liters capacity tank, allows to the prototype to cover 600 km. The car manufacturer has assured that the sophisticated propulsion system guarantees the silence, characteristic of a electric vehicle, but also the autonomy and the acceleration, typical of a petrol engine.
The prototype presentation took place in Brazil, where the diffusion of the bio-fuels has already spread, and because Brazil is a country where agricultural feedstocks, for example corn and sugar cane, are more readily available than petroleum. The car manufacturer hopes this approach to biofuel fits well with local infrastructure, making in the meantime the mobility costs lower and the driving satisfaction higher.
The battery’s capacity of the prototype is of 24 kWh and it is recharged by pure ethanol or by ethanol mixed with water. This bio-fuel, SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell), contains lower-cost ceramic-based materials instead platinum catalysts and operates at high temperatures. SOFC initiative is an extension of the car manufacturer Intelligent Power program that want to promote global use of electrified vehicles.
