All Dutch electric trains run on wind energy, meeting the goal to transition to 100 percent renewable energy a year ahead of schedule. The Netherlands had been buying renewable energy from neighboring countries in the UE, but the new construction of several wind farms helped meet the country’s goal to power all the their locomotives with the renewable energy on January 2017: the creation of an additional wind farm shall ensure that the production of all the energy necessary to power its train system was sufficient.
In the world the use of the renewable energy continues to increase: about 20 million homes can currently be powered by the US’s wind turbines, plus the US want to intensify the renewable energy resources, but they still lag far behind many European countries.
